“What is being Green” in terms of lighting

The following is a list of ideas for energy efficient lighting and controls you can easily do:

1. Add dimmers, occupancy sensors in rooms

2.Change lamps (industry term for bulb) to compact fluorescent. Please note to handle burn out lamps carefully as they do contain Mercury!

3. Change/Update old fluorescent lamps to high efficacy lamps, LED, T8 and T5 to name a few

4. Let the daylight in! open those blinds and clean your windows, there is nothing like daylighting :)

What is Title 24 – in California?

Title 24 is a energy code that significantly impacts lighting in new and remodeled homes. It mostly affects kitchen, bath, utility rooms but does also affect other rooms in the homes.

Kitchens

- at least 50% of installed wattage mus be of high efficacy light source (CFL,LED,FL or HID)

-up to 50% of installed wattage may be incandescent lighting if switched separately

Bathrooms, bedrooms, utiliy rooms

-install occupancy sensors on the lights! – best way to save on energy either way

If you are looking for further detailed information on Title 24′s lighting requirements for residential applications, see the UC Davis “Title 24-Residential Lighting Design Guide”.

TIPS OF THE DAY

Use lighting to highlight special features, creat focal points with lighting, a dining room chandelier is a focal point when there is a flower arrangement below it!
